One time, I failed to recognize a professional athlete whom I had the opportunity to converse with while our children were playing at an indoor playground. And my obliviousness to his identity reminded me of four resurrection appearances of Jesus in which those who encountered the risen Lord failed to recognize Him. Since the events surrounding the resurrection of Jesus are on people’s minds a little more this time of the year, let’s consider why these disciples were oblivious to Jesus and whether or not we can be guilty of the same.

Hebrews 12:1-2
Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
